How the conversions work
- A gallon is 4.54609 litres. Car mpg figures, prices per gallon and this converter all use it.
- Miles per litre is mpg divided by 4.546, and mpg is miles per litre times 4.546.
- Pounds per gallon is pence per litre times 4.54609, divided by 100. At 140p a litre, a gallon costs £6.36.
